FAQ

Before submitting a question regarding the Scholarship Program, please review the various sections of this FAQ.

1. What is the application period?

The application period runs from October 1, 2018 through January 31, 2019.

2. Who is eligible to apply?

All third-year (Class of 2020) students with full-time status at an accredited graduate medical (MD) program within the United States are eligible to apply. Candidates must be demonstrably committed to a clinical, teaching, and/or research career in ophthalmology.

3. How many scholarships are awarded?

One scholarship is awarded annually to one third-year (Class of 2020) graduate medical (MD) student.

4. What is the financial value of the Koch Kellan Scholarship?

The 2019 Koch Kellan Scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $10,000. This amount will be reviewed on an annual basis and may be subject to change.

5. What materials are required to apply?

The following items must be postmarked by January 31, 2019.

  1. A completed copy of the Koch Kellan Scholarship Application (may be submitted through DocuSign).
  2. An official academic transcript from the medical school at which you are currently enrolled.
  3. Two (2) letters of recommendation from an academic adviser, professor, research mentor, and/or attending ophthalmologist at a current or previously attended institution. Letters must be written or typed on academic letterhead and mailed directly to the address provided below. Additional letters above two (2) will not be considered.
  4. A letter from your School of Medicine on school letterhead verifying your full-time enrollment and status as a third-year medical student (Class of 2020). In lieu of this, if you have already completed your third year of medical school and are currently undertaking a fellowship, research project, or other academic or volunteer activity, a letter from the sponsoring institution will also be accepted.
  5. An essay (not to exceed 1,000 words) to the Scholarship Review Committee focusing on the following topics:
      • Why you plan to pursue a career in ophthalmology
      • A description of your study plans
      • An overview of your academic interests and activities (coursework, interdisciplinary or independent study) you have pursued as a foundation for your career
      • How your background and future career goals align with the Paragon BioTeck, Inc., Vision Statement: “Drive innovations to address unmet and underserved medical needs and improve the quality of lives around the world.”
  6. Optional: A resume or CV

6. Where do I send application materials?

Submit the Scholarship Application form and subsequent materials, postmarked by January 31, 2019, to the address listed below. Your application is not considered complete until all items are received by Paragon BioTeck, Inc. If desired, the application form and essay may be completed and submitted via DocuSign. Application materials submitted via fax or email will not be considered.

7. If I have previously applied for the Koch Kellan Scholarship but did not win, can I re-apply?

Previous applicants who did not win are eligible to re-apply.

8. If I am a previous Koch Kellan Scholar, can I re-apply?

Previous recipients are not eligible to re-apply.

9. Will I be notified when my scholarship materials have been received?

A confirmation email will be sent out after all of your application materials have been received.

10. Can I fax or send materials via email?

All application materials must be mailed to the address listed on the application. Application materials submitted via fax or email will not be considered by the Scholarship Review Committee. Submit the Scholarship Application form and subsequent materials, postmarked by January 31, 2019, to the address listed below. Your application is not considered complete until all items are received by Paragon BioTeck, Inc.

If desired, the Application Form and Essay may be completed and submitted via DocuSign. Application materials submitted via fax or email will not be considered.

11. Will my application materials be returned?

No, application materials will not be returned.

12. How are scholarship funds dispersed?

Funds will be released directly to the Financial Aid Office at the Scholar’s medical school. Further information regarding disbursement procedures will be provided to the chosen scholar.

13. What can I use the scholarship funds for?

Scholarship funds may be used only toward tuition and fees. Funds may not be used for books, living expenses, conference attendance or travel. Recipients will have one (1) calendar year to use funds and may specify the quarter, term, or semester to which they would like the funds applied. Any unused funds will be retained by Paragon BioTeck, Inc. Previous recipients of the award may not re-apply.

14. Is there a fee to apply?

No, there is no fee to apply for the Koch Kellan Scholarship.

15. When will the scholarship recipient be notified?

The scholarship recipient will be notified prior to a National industry event in the Spring.

16. Will I be notified if I don’t win?

Unfortunately, we cannot contact each applicant individually; however, we encourage all of our applicants to regularly visit KochKellan.com for updates, including the announcement of the Scholar for the current cycle.

17. Who do I contact if I have questions?

Paragon Gives strives to provide potential applicants with all of the information needed to apply. However, if you still have questions, please contact us. Expect 1-2 business days for a reply.

APPLICATION MATERIALS

The Application Form and subsequent materials must be postmarked prior to the deadline in order to complete your application.

Academic Transcripts

An official academic transcript from the medical school at which you are currently enrolled, mailed directly from the institution to the address below.

Letters of Recommendation

Two (2) letters of recommendation from an academic adviser, professor, research mentor, and/or attending ophthalmologist at a current or previously attended institution. Letters must be written or typed on academic letterhead and mailed directly to the address provided below. Additional letters above two (2) will not be considered.

Verification of Enrollment

A letter from your School of Medicine on school letterhead verifying your full-time enrollment and status as a third-year medical student (Class of 2020).

In lieu of this, if you have already completed your third year of medical school and are currently undertaking a fellowship, research project, or other academic or volunteer activity, a letter from the sponsoring institution will also be accepted.
